Welcome to Class 5 and Class 6!
Our Curriculum Project for Autumn 1 2021 is Blood Heart!
Let’s explore our circulatory system!
At the start of our project, we’ll look at what food we can eat to support a healthy heart. Afterwards, we’ll write a report and use software and models to learn more about how the circulatory system works. We’ll measure our heart rates and test how it is affected by exercise. In D&T, we’ll make model hearts, and test materials before making a stethoscope. As part of our music work, we’ll use our bodies as percussion instruments and feel our pulse. We’ll read shape poetry, and write poems inspired by the heart. We’ll learn about how smoking affects the heart and write adverts to persuade people to stop smoking. We’ll visit the ‘Give blood’ website, and make a flow diagram to illustrate the circulation process.
Our reading and writing will take us on a journey of a powerful story about friendship, loyalty and family around a topical and conversational issue. This is a novel that portrays the life of one certain 13-year-old boy (Cameron Kelsey) through his eyes. He wants to just be an ordinary kid, but, when he was young, he caught a deadly heart disease that caused his ordinary life to be turned into an absolute mess. To make things worse, his local hospital told him that he would barely live to his 14th Birthday. Our minds will be racing as we read this tense, emotive story together and we will create dramatic monologues, newspaper reports and so much more to enable us to connect with the characters and sensitive subject even further. Are you ready to step into the shoes of our main character and explore the world through the eyes of Cameron Kelsey?
