Welcome to Class 5 and Class 6!

Our Curriculum Project for Summer 2021 is Hola Mexico!

Hola Mexica

Bienvenido a Mexico! During this half term, we’re going to explore this unique country, from its towering temples to its fun-packed festivals.

We’ll watch a traditional Mexican performance and join in with percussion instruments. To cool down afterwards, we might even sample a refreshing drink of sangrita or limeade. We’ll use non-fiction books and research online to find out about the importance of music in Mexican culture and even have a go at folk dancing. To dive in deeper, we’ll make delicious drinks and savoury dishes. We’ll learn about the ‘Day of the Dead’ and create 3-D skulls. Using maps, we’ll locate Mexico and discover its natural features. We’ll discover what daily life is like and how it has changed over time. At the end of the project, we’ll listen to Maya music and learn a traditional song. We’ll also perform Mexican music from the past and present. Mexico is a fascinating land full of music and celebration so it is time for Upper Key Stage Two to explore the wonders and culture it has to offer.

Set in a desert in Texas, we’ll learn all about the world and ‘bad luck’ of Stanley Yelnats by reading the book ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar. Our book this half term is a hilarious yet powerful story about crime, punishment, redemption and holes, lots and lots of holes. Our reading will inspire our writing and take us on so many different paths from persuasive adverts and narratives to leaflets and letters. The novel takes place at a boys' juvenile detention center situated in the dried up bed of a fictional lake. The boys are forced to dig holes but the question is what are they really digging for?
